Cellular respiration Flashcards
What is C.R?
when cells make energy from food molecules through chemical reactions.
who carries out C.R?
all living organisms
what is the word equation for cellular respiration?
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
what is the balanced chemical equation for cellular respiration ?
C6H12O6 +6O2 -> 6CO2 +6 H2O + 36 ATP
what does atp stand for?
adenine triphosphate
what is aerobic respiration?
respiration which requires oxygen
what is anaerobic respiration?
respiration which does not require oxygen
What are the 3 steps in C.R?
- Glycolysis
- Krebs Cycle
- electron transport chain
where does glycolysis occur?
in the cytoplasm
what happens to glucose in glycolysis and how much atp is formed?
it get’s broken down in half and 2 ATP
After this glycolysis, if oxygen is available where does the pyruvate formed in glycolysis go and what happens?
goes to the cytoplasm in the krebs cycle which means it is broken down
After this glycolysis, if oxygen is not available where does the pyruvate formed in glycolysis go and what happens?
stays in the cytoplasm and fermentation occurs
What happens in glycolysis?
C6H12O6 is broken down to C3H6O3 which creates 2 ATP
What happens in the Krebs cycle?
- occurs in the matrix of mitochondria
- with the aid of enzymes and oxygen pyruvate is broken down and it form CO2,H2O AND ATP molecules
What happens in the electron transport chain?
- occurs in the cristate
- high energy hydrogen ions gives up energy to form 32 atp and water
