Circulatory System Flashcards
1
Q
what does the blood do?
A
- collects oxygen from the lungs
- collects nutrients from the intestine and transports it to the liver then the whole body
- carries CO2 and other wastes away from the cells
- maintains constant body temperature
2
Q
what does blood contain?
A
- Plasma
- Red Blood Cells
- White Blood Cells
- Platelets
- Water
- Mineral ions
3
Q
what is plasma?
A
- This is the liquid part of the blood and makes up approximately 55% of the blood.
- It is a pale yellow fluid
4
Q
What are red blood cells?
A
- -Pliable, elastic cells that can twist & flex
through blood vessels - Do NOT contain a NUCLEUS or MITOCHONDRIA.
- Produced in bone marrow, before they are
released their nucleus breaks down - Life span of ~4 months
- They are red in colour due to the
red pigment haemoglobin.
5
Q
what do arteries do?
A
- carry blood AWAY from the heart.
- have thick muscular walls.
- blood is under high pressure in arteries
- and so it expands when blood is pushed into it from the heart.
6
Q
what do capillaries do?
A
- Have walls that are only one cell thick
- Materials can diffuse easily through thr cells
- From here it may enter the body cells
7
Q
what do veins do?
A
- have relatively thin walls and
- transport blood BACK to the heart.
- Blood is under very low pressure
- So blood gets back to the heart by
