what does the blood do?

A
  • collects oxygen from the lungs
  • collects nutrients from the intestine and transports it to the liver then the whole body
  • carries CO2 and other wastes away from the cells
  • maintains constant body temperature

what is plasma?

A
  • This is the liquid part of the blood and makes up approximately 55% of the blood.
  • It is a pale yellow fluid

What are red blood cells?

A
  • -Pliable, elastic cells that can twist & flex
    through blood vessels
  • Do NOT contain a NUCLEUS or MITOCHONDRIA.
  • Produced in bone marrow, before they are
    released their nucleus breaks down
  • Life span of ~4 months
  • They are red in colour due to the
    red pigment haemoglobin.

what do arteries do?

A
  • carry blood AWAY from the heart.
  • have thick muscular walls.
  • blood is under high pressure in arteries
  • and so it expands when blood is pushed into it from the heart.
