Endocrine Flashcards
What 2 hormones does the thyroid secrete?
Thyroxine/tetraiodothyronine (t4) and triiodothyronine (t3)
What do thyroid hormones do?
Aid cells in up taking of oxygen and regulates metabolic rate
Outer portion of adrenal gland
Adrenal cortex
What does adrenal cortex do?
Secretes corticosteroids
Inner portion or adrenal gland
Adrenal medulla
What does the adrenal medulla do?
Secretes catecholamines
Glucocorticoids
Influences sugar (secreted by adrenal cortex)
Mineralocorticoids
Influences salt (secreted by adrenal cortex)
Gonadocorticoids
Influences sex (secreted by adrenal cortex)
Insulin
Produced by islets of langerhans in pancreas, glucose into cells and storage of glycogen (lowers blood sugar)
Glucagon
Produced by islets of langerhans in pancreas, glucose into blood by breaking down glycogen in liver cells (raises blood sugar)
GH/ STH
Growth hormone/ somatotropin stimulates growth
TSG
Thyroid-stimulating hormone, stimulates thyroid gland
ACTH
Adrenocorticotropic hormone, stimulates adrenal cortex
FSH
Follicle stimulating hormone (gonadotropin) stimulates ovary & testes
