Cell structure/cells Flashcards
Nucleus
Controls operation of cell. I.e. Cell division/structure/function
Chromosome
Rod-like structures in nucleus. All cells have 23 pairs except sec cells which have 23 unpaired
Genes
Regions in a chromosome that contain dna
DNA
Regulates activities of cell according to sequence
Karyotype
Pic of someone’s chromosomes arranged by size, shape and number
Cell membrane
Surrounds/protects cell and controls what goes in and out of cell
Cytoplasm
All material outside of nucleus but contained within the cell membrane. Supplies chemical needs of cell.
Mitochondria
Sausage shaped. Provides energy for cell.
Catabolism
The chemical process of breaking down sugar and fat into simpler substances used by mitochondria
Endoplasmic reticulum
Cellular tunnel systems that manufacture proteins for cells
Ribosomes
Attached to endoplasmic reticulum that build chains of proteins
Anabolism
Process of building large proteins from small proteins pieces (amino acids)
Metabolism
Total of chemical processes occurring in a cell
Muscle cell
Long and slender contract and relax
Epithelial cell
Square and flat skin cell provides protection
