Endocrine Flashcards
What mechanism causes spontaneous lactation in non-virgin goats?
Prolactin producing tissu in the mammary gland
Which peptide is associated with inappropriate lactation in virgin does and bucks?
PTHrP
Which 2 tumours can trigger inappropriate lactation in goats?
Pituitary adenoma and granulosa cell tumour
Which feedstuffs can trigger inappropriate lactation? (2)
Clover, mouldy grain
How do goitrogens cause goitre development
Prevent idoine uptake into and iodination in thyroid. Leads to continued TRH production in hypothalamus and TSH secretion from pituitary.
Name two goitrogenic toxins, and 7 plants they can be found in.
Thiocyanate and Goitrin.
Kale, rape, mustard, soy, white clover, sorghum, millet
Which breeds of sheep (1) and gaots (2) are predisposed to iodine deficiency?
Dorset, Boer, Angora.
Name breeds with an autosomal recessive defect in thyroglobulin synthesis (1 sheep, 3 goats)
Merino. Dutch, pygmy, Nubian
List clinical sign of iodine deficiency (12)
Poor wool/hair, alopecia, tendon laxity, MSK abnormalities, poor growth, decreased fertility and libido, cycle irregularities, decreased conception, abortion, weak offspring, reduced milk production
At what rate should iodine be included in a ration?
0.5mg/kg DM (0.8 for lactating animals)
Explain the pathophysiology of osteodystrphia fibrosa
Increased osteoclastic activity leads to replacement with firbous tissue. This leads to facia bone deformities, pathological fractures and lameness.
Llist four dietary causes of hyperparathryroidism
Insufficient vitamin D, Excessive phosphorous (grain), oxalate-containing plants, excessive supplementation of anionic salts (aimed to reduce uroliths).
Which breed is predisposed to adrenal adenomas?
Angora goats
During pseudopregnancy, for how long are progesterone concentrations elevated?
100 days
List three predisposing factors for pseudopregnancy
Exogenous hormone use, genetics, extended lactation
