Emotional Intelligence Flashcards
Difference between Emotional Intelligence and EQ?
Emotional Intelligence refers to the ability to identify, express, and understand one’s own and others’ emotions. It includes the potential to control personal emotions, use them to make good decisions, and act effectively. It emphasizes the ability to apply. EQ implies a measure and can only test one’s knowledge of emotions and how they work.
Who first popularized the term “emotional intelligence”?
Daniel Goleman with his book Emotional Intelligence (1995)
Multiple intelligence theory
Howard Gardner - includes interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence to show that IQ fails to explain complete cognitive ability
Criticisms of EI
1) Confuses morals and skills
2) Does not have predictive outcomes
3) Measurement is concerning because it can only measure self-perception of ability
Salovey and Mayer (The Ability Model)
Defined by the capacity to reason about emotions and enhance thinking
- perceive emotions by understanding verbal and nonverbal cues
- reason with emotions by using them to solve problems
- analyze emotions to select an action
- manage and regulate emotions
The Mixed Model
5 competencies that mix EI qualities with other personality traits unrelated to emotion or intelligence: self-awareness; self-regulation; motivation; empathy; social skills
Trait Model
Not an ability-based construct; establishes that people have emotional traits or self-perceptions as part of their personality, including behavioral abilities, and measurement is self-reported
