EL4 Flashcards
periodic table
a list of elements in order of atomic (proton) number that groups elements together according to their common properties
as protons get closer in the nucleus
they repel with increasing repulsion
however, nuclear force is stronger
neutrons role in nucleus
do not have charge but do have magnetic properties
act as buffer between protons
periodicity
the occurrence of periodic patterns
melting boiling points suddenly drop across a period
as elements go from metals to non-metals (which have weak intermolecular forces)
group (number)
number of electrons in outer shell
period (number)
shell number being filled
s-block elements
group 1 and 2
outermost s sub shell being filled
p-block orbitals
groups 3-8(0)
outermost p sub shell being filled
