EL2 Flashcards
Spectroscopy
the study of how light and matter interact
Wave theory of light
form of ER so has a wavelength and frequency, waves can have different wavelengths and frequencies
Speed of light
300,000,000ms(-1) in a vacuum
Particle theory of light
photons (light particles) are volumes of energy, the energy of the photon is related directly to the position of the light on the electromagnetic spectrum
Bohr’s theory
the electrons in an atom only exist in certain definite energy levels
a photon of light is emitted or absorbed when an electron changes from one energy level to another
energy of the photon is equal to the difference between the two energy levels (delta E)
emission spectra
black with exception to the coloured frequencies of light emitted by atoms of the element
absorption spectra
black lines in an otherwise continuous spectrum, lines correspond to the frequency of light absorbed by atoms of the element
intensity of lines in emission/absorption spectra
indicates element’s abundance
