EDUCATION: Ethnicity and education - Internal factors (Institutional racism - Ethnocentric curriculum + marketisation & segregation) ) Flashcards
How is the ethnocentric curriculum institutional racism
Because it builds a racial bias into the everyday workings of schools and colleges
Ethnocentric curriculum
- Language, lit and music
- Tronya + Williams
- David
TRONYA + WILLIAMS: There is a meagre provision of teaching Asian languages compared to European
DAVID: The national curriculum is a ‘specifically British’ one, ignoring non-European language, literature and music
Ethnocentric curriculum
- History
- Ball, give an example
BALL: Criticises the promoting of ‘little Englandism’
- E.G. the history curriculum recreates a mythical age of empire and past glories, ignoring black and Asian history
Ethnocentric curriculum
- Coard - how does the E.C lead to underachievement
Criticism
- Stone
COARD: The E.C may undermine Ethnic Minorities self-esteem and lead to failure - like Britains colonisation or slavery of black people
Criticism: yet, Indian and Chinese achievement is above national average
STONE: Black children do not actually suffer from low esteem.
Marketisation and segregation
Gillborn
- How does marketisation cause institutional racism
GILLBORN: Marketisation = allowing selection = allowing negative stereotypes to influence entry decisions
Marketisation and segregation
Moore and Davenport
- How do they support Gillborn
- What is an example they use in which a school disadvantages ethnic minority pupils
MOORE + DAVENPORT: Research showed how selection procedures led to ethnic minority pupils failing to get into a higher secondary school because of discrimination
- E.G primary school reports were used to screen out pupils with language difficulties while the application process as difficult for non-English speakers to understand.
Marketisation and segregation
- Racism in school admission procedures mans ethnic minority children are likely to end up in unpopular schools
Why is this?
- Primary schools stereotype minority pupils
- Racist bias in interviews for school places
- Lack of information and lack of forms in ethnic minority languages
- Parents unaware of how the waiting list system work and the importance of deadlines
