HOW: Their dominant discourse defined ethnic minority pupils’ identities as lacking the identity of the ideal pupil.
WHAT:
- Ideal pupil; white, MC, masculinised, normal sexuality, achieves in the ‘right way’ through initiative and natural ability
- Pathologised pupil; Asian, ‘deserving poor’, feminised, either asexual or oppresses sexuality, conformist and culture bound ‘overachiever’ through hard work instead of natural ability.
- Demonised pupil; black or white, WC, hyper-sexualised, unintelligence, peer-led, culturally deprived and underachieves
INTERVIEW: found black students are demonised as loud, challenging, excessively sexual and having unaspirational home cultures.
