Q

NEW RIGHT VIEW

What does Sewell argue about role models and how does this cause underachievement in young males

A

Not lack of male role models, lack of consistent discipline / ‘fatherly tough love’ = emotional and behavioural difficulties.
= street gangs of other fatherless boys and media inspired role model of anti-school black masculinity

NEW RIGHT VIEW

  • Sewell and peer pressure
  • Sewell and asian and black minorities

EVALUATION:
Gillborn

A
  • Peer pressure impacts children as they are subject to powerful anti-school peer pressure
  • Compared black boys to asian students - one group is being nurtured while the other is ‘clocking up educational hours’

GILLBORN: Its not peer pressure, but institutional racism in the education system itself that produces the failure of large numbers of black boys

Pryce

  • What is his argument as to why there is underachievement comparing asian to black Caribbean culture
  • Asian culture
  • Black Caribbean culture
  • Conclusion
A

Due to the different impacts of colonialism

  • Asians are high achievers because culture is more resistant to racism = greater self worth
  • Black Caribbean culture is less cohesive and resistant to racism = low self esteem = failure
  • Experience of slavery was devastating for blacks; lost everything but asian heritage was not destroyed by colonial rule

CULT DEP CRITICISMS

Driver
Lawrence
Strand

A

DRIVER: Positive effects of cultural deprivation are ignored
- Black Caribbean families provides girls with a strong mother role model. = possibly why black girls achieve more than black boys

LAWRENCE: Challenges PRYCE and low self-esteem.
- Black pupils underachieve because of racism, not low self-esteem

STRAND: Relative poverty rather than cultural factors + institutional racism leads to a lack of opportunity for young black students is holding them back

Keddie

  • Why does she argue against cultural deprivation
  • So why do ethnic minorities underachieve?
  • How does she suggest we overcome this
A

KEDDIE: Cultural deprivation is a victim blaming explanation. Ethnic minority children are culturally different, not deprived.

  • Underachieve because schools are ethnocentric = imposing dominant white culture
  • Overcome this using alternative education in the school system
Multicultural education: policy recognising and valuing minority cultures, including them in the curriculum

Anti-racist curriculum: policy that challenges thee prejudice and discrimination that exists in schools and the wider society
