earth science test 6 Flashcards
What is energy
the ability to do work
what is potential energy
stored energy - increases with height
what is Kinetic energy
energy of motion - temperature is the average kinetic energy of molecules
what is absolute zero?
when all energy ceases to exist
absolute zero facts -
.it is the lowest possible temp
.0 , -460F, -273C
What is conservation of energy?
the principle which states that energy can neither be created or destroyed, only transferred in a closed system
What is a closed system?
energy cannot escape or enter
what is a source?
point of origin of a type of energy
What is a sink?
point to which energy flows
What is our main source of energy?
the sun
energy always flows from…
source(hot) to sink(cold)
What is our secondary source of energy?
Radioactive decay from inside the earth
Visible light waves-
visible light waves are the parts of the electromagnetic energy that is radiated by the sun and observed with the human eye
What is electromagnetic energy?
energy that is radiated, or given off, in he form of transverse waves from all matter not at absolute zero
When is the most energy radiated?
when its the highest temperature
How are different types of electromagnetic energy distinguished?
by their wavelength
What is the wavelength?
its the distance between any two corressponding points on successive cycle
What electromagnetic energy does the earth receive the most?
visible light
What is more powerful long- wave energy or short wave energy?
short wave energy
What cam ultraviolet rays do to your body?
ultraviolet rays can cause sunburns and skin cancer
Why is the ozone layer important?
The ozone layer protects us from harmful UV rays
Why is our ozone layer being depleted?
it is being depleted due to the use of Chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs
Where does energy move away and to?
Energy moves away from an area of high concentration (source) to areas of low concentration (sink)
What happends during a dynamic equilibrium?
a region loses and gains equal amounts of energy and usually the temperature of the region remains constant
