T-LoC
Is a spontaneous loss of consciousness with complete recovery
3 main causes of t-LoC
Neurological
Psychological
Cardiovascular
Essential history taking for T-LoC
Before Event:
circumstances
posture
prodromal symptoms - sweating, feeling warm
During Event: appearance - eyes open or shut colour movement - limb jerking and duration tongue biting injury duration of T-LoC
During Recovery:
time to recover
confusion
weakness down one side
T-LoC Red Flags
Family history of sudden death in people aged younger then 40 and or inherited cardiac condition
> 65yrs experiencing T-LoC without prodromal symptoms
New or unexplained breathlessness
Heart failure
T-LoC during exertion
A heart murmur
management of:
T-LoC
Convey pt to ED unless a clear diagnosis of uncomplicated faint or situational syncope is made and there is nothing in the initial assessment to raise clinical or social concern.
Don’t forget ECG
Keep re-assessing
Give copies of ECG and PRF to receiving clinician when care is transferred, and to the person who had T-LoC
