EAC Gross Anatomy Flashcards
3 main body cavities
Head (Cephalic)
Chest (Thoracic)
Abdomen & Pelvis
the head consists of:
Cranium
Eyes and orbits
Nasal cavities
Oral cavity
the cranium contains:
Brain
Origins of the cranial nerves
Inner and middle ear
Major blood vessels
head boundaries:
Superior
Partly by the two parietal, the frontal and the occipital bones
head boundaries:
Inferior
The various bones that make up the base of the skull
head boundaries:
Lateral
The parietal and temporal bones
head boundaries:
Anterior
The frontal bone, partly by the ethmoid and sphenoid bones and the bones of the face except the mandible and maxilla
head boundaries:
Posterior
The occipital bone
the chest or thoracic cavity contains the:
Lungs
Heart
Oesophagus
Major blood vessels
chest boundaries:
Superior
The root of the neck and the first pair of ribs
chest boundaries:
Inferior
The diaphragm
chest boundaries:
Anterior
The sternum and ribs
chest boundaries:
Posterior
The 12 thoracic vertebrae and the ribs
chest boundaries:
Lateral
The ribs and intercostal muscle on either side
the 9 regions of the abdomen are:
Right hypochondriac region Epi-gastric region Left hypochondriac region Right lumbar region Umbilical region Left lumbar region Right iliac region Hypo-gastric region Left iliac region
the abdomen contains the:
Stomach Duodenum Small intestine Large intestine Pancreas Gall bladder Liver Spleen Kidneys Ureters Major blood vessels
abdomen boundaries:
Superior
The diaphragm
abdomen boundaries:
Inferior
Continues with the pelvis
abdomen boundaries:
Anterior
The large abdominal muscles
abdomen boundaries:
Posterior
The Lumbar vertebrae and posterior abdomen wall
abdomen boundaries:
Lateral
The floating ribs and abdominal muscles
the pelvic cavity is:
the area of the abdomen contained within the pelvic girdle. It is continuous with the inferior boundary of the abdomen
the pelvic cavity contains the:
Bladder
Urethra
Reproductive organs
Rectum
position of major organs:
Stomach
The stomach lies in the epigastric, Umbilical and left hypochondriac regions of the abdomen. It is partly protected by the lower ribs on the left side.
position of major organs:
Liver
The liver occupies the right hypochondrium and the greater part of the epigastrium. The superior border is immediately beneath the diaphragm, extending medially as far as the stomach. The right lateral border extends to the level of the tenth rib.
position of major organs:
Spleen
The spleen lies in the left hypochondriac region of the abdomen. It lies between the stomach and the diaphragm.
position of major organs:
Kidneys
The kidneys lie in the right and left lumbar regions
position of major organs:
Caecum
the caecum lies in the right iliac fossa.
