Post mortem examinations and investigations explain 50% of unexpected deaths.
High risk if born prematurely or with a low birth weight
Most common in neonatal period 28 days-1yr
Most common in boys

Low birth weight Premature birth Smoking during pregnancy Smoking in the same household as the baby Unsafe sleeping position and environment Not breastfeeding Sleeping with the baby
management of SUDICA
Always attempt CPR unless condition unequivocally associated with death -PM staining, decomposition, rigor mortis etc
Care for family
Take to nearest appropriate ED
Document
Safeguard - dead pt and any other children in house
sequence of events with SUDICA
Confirmation of death Coroner Police inquiry Compulsory post mortem Inquest Verdict Death certification and registration Funeral
SUDICA PRF must include
Times
Position and situation of infant
Description of events form parents/carers
Shoulder number of Police officer
Complete PRF as soon as you have the opportunity
