Dural Venous Sinuses Flashcards
Dural venous sinuses ultimately drain via the
Internal jugular veins
Drainage site of CSF via arachnoid granulations
Superior Sagittal sinus of Dural Venous sinuses
Much smaller than the superior sagittal sinus, runs in the inferior concave free border of the falx cerebri and ends at the straight sinus
Inferior sagittal sinus
Union of inferior sagittal sinus and great cerebral vein. Runs along attachment between falx cerebri and tentorium cerebelli, and joins the confluence of sinuses
Straight sinus
Paired sinus, pass laterally fron confluence of sinuses, form groove in occipital bone, course along posterolateral attachment margins of the tentorium cerebelli and become sigmoid sinuses as they approach posterior aspect of petrous temporal bones
Transverse sinus
Continuation of transverse sinuses, forms deep S-shaped grooves in temporal and occipital bones, drains through internal jugular vein
Sigmoid sinus
Pool of stagnant blood contained by dural folds. Situated in middle cranial fossa on either side of the body of the sphenoid.
Cavernous sinus
Anterior boundary: superior orbital fissure
Posterior boundary: apex of petrous temporal bone
Cavernous sinus
Connected by anterior and posterior intercavernous sinuses
