Drugs in labour + IoL Flashcards
1
Q
outline the drugs used in labour
A
- syntocinon
- ergometrine
- syntometrine
- prostaglandins
2
Q
describe syntocinon
A
- synthetic oxytocin
- given to initiate labour & stimulate contractions during labour
- resembles normal physiological contractions
3
Q
describe ergometrine
A
- doesn’t resemble normal physiological contractions
- only given in PPH
4
Q
describe syntometrine
A
combination of syntocinon & ergometrine
5
Q
describe prostaglandins
A
- vaginal prostaglandin E2 pessaries given to induce labour
- cause uterine muscles to contract & cervix to soften
6
Q
what are the disadvantages to IoL?
A
- more painful & less efficient than normal labour
- increased risk of hyperstimulating uterus w oxytocin/prostaglandins
7
Q
indications for IoL?
A
- post maturity - term + 7 days
- macrosomia
- PROM
- PET
- reduced foetal movements
8
Q
what does Bishop’s score indicate?
A
<8= cervical ripening (opening) required
>8= predicts successful IoL + indicates that labour will most likely commence spontaneously
9
Q
options for IoL?
A
- vaginal prostaglandin pessaries
- membrane sweep
- artificial ROM + IV Oxytocin
10
Q
how many contractions should you aim for?
A
4 in 10 mins
