Subcutaneous Injections - Method
A
- •Follow standard IP&C procedures
- ••Explain procedure to patient and gain consent
- •Select appropriate drug and check drug is correct, including dosage
- ••Select injection site – deltoid muscle area or outer aspect of thigh
- ••Position patient and expose site, use 2% chlorhexidine gluconate in 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe as required

Subcutaneous Injections - Method
A
- Warn the patient, remove the needle guard and elevate the subcutaneous tissue – pinch the skin
- With the needle bevel upwards, insert the needle at 45 degrees in one quick motion. (90 degrees for subcutaneous needle)
- Always ensure there is approx. 1cm of needle left visible when injecting!
- Draw back the piston of the syringe, if no blood, smoothly administer the drug
- Withdraw the needle at the same angle as inserted and gently massage the skin
- Dispose of needle appropriately

- Drawing up needle (blunt)
- Syringe
- Intramuscular needle (22-25 gauge)
- Alcohol wipe
- Sharps container

Intramuscular Injections - Method
A
- Follow standard IP&C procedures
- Explain procedure to patient and gain consent
- Select appropriate drug and check drug is correct, including dosage
- Select injection site – deltoid muscle area or outer aspect of thigh
- Position patient and expose site, use 2% chlorhexidine gluconate in 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe as required
- Warn the patient, remove the needle guard and spread the skin to try and move any subcut fat out the way.
- Z method.
- Insert the needle at a 90 degree angle using a ‘dart like’ grip on the syringe.
- Always ensure there is approx. 1cm of needle left visible when injecting!
- Draw back the piston of the syringe, if no blood, smoothly administer the drug over approximately 10 seconds.
- Hold the needle were it is for 0 seconds then withdraw the needle at the same angle as inserted.
- Dispose of needle appropriately
