DNA and The Genome Flashcards
What is DNA
DNA is a chemical found in the nucleus of cells
It is the molecule in the nucleus that carries our genetic code
Where are DNA found?
DNA is found in the nucleus of cells
DNA is arranged into long, coiled molecules called chromosomes
What is a chromosome?
Chromosomes are found in pairs - one chromosome from that pair will be inherited from your father, the other from your mother
Each chromosome is composed of DNA and protein molecules which hold the structure together
What is a gene?
A gene is a section of a chromosome that codes for a particular protein, for example: one gene will determine what colour your eyes are, another in your pancreas will determine whether you produce insulin
