Chapter 12: Reproduction Flashcards
What are the two types of reproduction?
Sexual and Asexual
What are the characteristics of sexual reproduction?
- two parents
- fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote
- characteristics combination of both parents
- leads to genetic variation
- gametes formed by meiosis, zygote divides by mitosis
What are the characteristics of asexual reproduction?
- 1 parent involved
- no gametes
- no fusion
- mitosis
- no variation
What is DNA?
DNA is a chemical found in the nucleus of cells.
It is a polymer made up of two strands joined together.
The structure of DNA is a double stranded, double helix
What is a chromosome?
A chromosome is a molecule which contains the DNA
What is a gene?
Genes are section of chromosomes, they are a code of DNA
What is a allele?
For every single gene there is two pairs, one from sperm one from egg.
What is a genome?
A genome is all the genes of an organism (genetic material)
What is a protein?
Long strands of amino acids
What is a Mitochondria?
The powerhouse of the cell, it allows aerobic respiration to take place. It contains a small amount of DNA
