Can not be passed from one individual to another
What are risk factors?
They are factors of a persons lifestyle or substances present in a persons body or environment that have been shown to be linked to an increased rate of disease
What causes tumors?
Both benign and malignant tumours result from abnormal, uncontrollable cell division.
What are benign tumours?
Tumours that don’t spread to other tissues
What are malignant tumours
Tumours that can spread to other parts of the body?
Describe the spread of malignant tumours
They are cancers.
They invade neighbouring tissues and may spread to different parts of the body in the blood where they form secondary tumours.
Risk factors for cancer
Smoking Obesity Common viruses HIV UV exposure Genetics
What condition can smoking cause
Cardiovascular disease
Coronary heart disease
Lung cancer and lung diseases
What happens to a foetus exposed to cigarette smoke
It leads to restricted oxygen meaning premature birth, low birthweight and stillbirth
What does tar do to your lungs?
It is a carcinogen. It acts on the delicate cells of the lungs and greatly increases the risk of lung cancer developing and other cancers of the breathing system
How does diet affect your risk of developing cardiovascular diseases?
Directly through cholesterol levels and indirectly through obesity
Does exercise affect the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease

What is obesity a strong risk factor for?
Type 2 diabetes
What is a risk factor?
A risk factor is something that causes a disease or condition
What does alcohol do to your liver?
Damage the liver
