Chapter 9: Respiration Flashcards
What is cellular respiration?
Cellular respiration is an exothermic reaction that occurs continuously in living cells
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water (energy transferred to environment)
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
Mitochondria
When doing exercise what process causes the muscles to contract?
Aerobic repiration
How does the body respond to exercise (3 ways)
An increase in heart rate, in breathing rate and in the breath volume
Glycogen stores are converted to glucose for cellular respiration
The flow of oxygenated blood to the muscles increases
What do body responses aim to do during exercise?
They act to increase the rate of supply of glucose and oxygen to the muscles and the rate of removal of carbon dioxide from the muscles.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Is respiration without oxygen. When this takes place in animal cells glucose is incompletely broken down into lactic acid
What happens to muscles if they work hard for a long time?
They become fatigued and don’t contract efficiently, if they don’t get enough oxygen they respire anaerobically.
What is oxygen debt?
It is the amount of oxygen that is needed to break down the excess lactic acid into water and carbon dioxide after exercise has finished .
What happens in plants during anaerobic respiration.
The respiration in micro-organisms and plants such as yeast result in the production of ethanol and carbon dioxide
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is the sum of all of the reactions in the body.
