Chapter 2: Cell Division Flashcards
What are the stages of cell division
Stage 1- the replication of DNA, the cell increases in size and it makes more sub cellular structures ( mitochondria, ribosomes, chloroplasts)
Stage 2- the two sets of mitochondria are pulled to either side of the cell and the cell splits this process in mitosis
Stage 3-the two cells form separately and the process is complete
How are stem cells different from ever other cell in the body
They are undifferentiated cells they have the ability to multiply into a wide variety different specialised cells
Name 3 different areas we can harvest stem cells from the human body
Bone marrow
Blood
Brain
Liver
Stem cells in plants
They are harvested from the plant meristems
They are used to clone the adult plant of a species of flower very quickly and economically
They can save endangered species of plant from extinction
What are the problems with stem cell research?
Stem cells come from aborted embryos. Some people believe that this is morally wrong.
The process of developing these cells is long, slow, difficult and EXPENSIVE
Although they have been able to develop adult stem cells they have only been able to develop them into a small range of cells
Are chromosones found in pairs?
Yes
What is the cell cycle?
It is the process of cells dividing in stages
