Digestion and Absorption of Lipids Flashcards
Three types of lipids?
Triglycerides
Phospholipids
Sterols
What enzyme digests lipids in the mouth and the stomach?
Lingual lipase
What is special about fat digestion in neonates?
Mother’s breast milk is high in fat but they have low pancreatic lipase activity so lingual lipase is the main enzyme needed as a lipase
What lipase is released from Chief cells?
Gastric lipase
What occurs when acidic chyme enters the duodenum?
It causes release of secretin form enteroendocrine cells
What occurs when fatty, protein-rich chyme enters the duodenum?
It causes release of cholecystokinin (CCK)
What does CCK and secretin cause respectively?
Travels in blood to pancreas to cause secretion of enzyme-rich pancreatic juice and secretion of bicarbonate-rich juice
Effect of CCK on gallbladder?
Contraction causing release of bile and hepatopancreatic sphincter relaxation
Effect of bile salts and secretin on the liver?
Production of bile
