Deep Brain Stimulation Flashcards
DBS Procedure
Stimulating electrodes are placed stereotactically into certain deep brain structures
Secured to skull + into ear down neck
3-4 years battery replacement
DBS treating Parkinson’s
Only the motor systems
Not non-motor - gait, balance, cognitive problems, depression
Criteria DBS Parkinson’s
Idiopathic PD No sensory issues- numbness etc No weakness or hyperreflexia No mental disorders Still respond to Levodopa
Zona Incerta
Tremor
Subthalamic nucleus
tremor
Globus pallidus internus
Dystonia and tremor
Other brain regions DBS
Epilepsy- only reduce doesn’t eliminate seizure frequency
Chronic neuropathic pain -reduces does not eliminate
Tourette syndrome
Thalamic centromedian
Treatment resistant depression
Brodmann area 25 (subcallosal cingulate)
Anorexia
Hypothalamus
Addiction
Nucleus accumbens
Alzheimers disease
Anterior of fornix
Mechanisms of DBS
4 Hypotheses: Inhibition Excitation Disruption Neuro-network modulation
