D2.3 SL / HL Flashcards
Universal solvent
a substance that dissolves most chemicals
polar
electrons are not shared evenly over the covalent bond and the atoms involved have smallpartial chargesresulting in what are called dipoles
solvent
substance (molecule) with the ability to dissolve other substances (solutes) to form a solution
solute
a substance that can be dissolved into a solution by a solvent
solution
a homogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent
Solvation
the interaction of a solvent with the dissolved solute
solubility
the quality or property of being soluble or solvable
Osmosis
the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules, through a cell’s partially permeable membrane
semi-permeable membrane
thin biological sheets of material that allow certain molecules to pass through them more easily than others
Aquaporin
channel proteins which facilitate the passive diffusion of water and small neutral molecules across biological membranes
Hypertonic solution
any external solution that has a high solute concentration and low water concentration compared to body fluids
Hypotonic solution
a solution that has a lower concentration of solute compared to the cell
Isotonic solution
any external solution that has the same solute concentration and water concentration compared to body fluids
dynamic equilibrium
when the forward and reverse processes occur at the same rate, resulting in no observable change in the system
percent change
the percent difference between a final and initial value. Find percent change by dividing the difference of values by the initial value
