Q

What cytokine do Th1 cell secrete? 4 fxns

A

IFNg

  1. Activates NK cells
  2. Increases MHC expression + antigen presentation by all cells (show me what you’ve got!!!)
  3. Activates macrophages

Q

Difference in fxn between IFN a/b and IFN g

A

IFNa/b - made and released by virally infected cells so that local neighbors enter non-infectious state by degrading viral nucleic acids + protein
IFNg activates macro, Th1, NK (also anti-tumor by making tumors increase MHC 1 expression
“Alpha activates, B be less”

17
Q

Which cytokine maintains granulomas

A

Think TB
Infected macrophage secretes IL 12 -> activated T/NK cells -> secrete IFNg -> binds Janus kinases 1+2 -> STAT1 TF -> activate genes for M.TB killing
Defective IFNg R -> disseminated TB disease
