Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Cranial nerves are part of which nervous system?
Peripheral
Explain the travel of the optic nerve.
Exits optic foramen, binds with other optic nerve to then lead to the optic chiasma. from there, it runs towards the brain (thalamus) by way of the optic tracts. Some fibers terminate in the superior colliculi and others in the thalamus. Then travels to the occpital bone.
Left optic tract consists of nerve fibers from the….
left lateral retina and right medial retina.
the left hemisphere registers left or right optic tracts? (and vice versa)
Left
the right optic tract consists of nerve fibers from…
the right lateral retina and left medial retina.
Which muscles does the oculomotor nerve innervate?
superior, inferior and medial rectus. levator palpebrae superioris. inferior oblique muscle. ciliary body muscles. Iris as well!
What does the inferior division of the occulomotor carry?
- it divides into superior and inferior divisions once it exits and enters the orbit.
Presynaptic autonomic fibers to the ciliary ganglion
Damage to the trochlear nerve causes what?
The eyeball to stop turning out and down (inferolaterally) called diplopia (double vision)!
Which is the only cranial nerve to emerge dorsally from the brainstem?
CIV
Which is the only nerve attached to the pons?
Trigeminal
Where does the abducens arise from?
just inferior to the pons at the medulla oblongata
Where does the CVII (facial) emerge from?
Between pons and medulla on the brain
Where is the vestibulocochlear nerve located?
in petrous portion of the temporal bone at the internal auditory meatus.
Which nerve does not exit the skull?
vestibulo
Where is the vestibulocochlear nerve found?
Just below the pons at the junction of the medulla oblongata
Where does the glossopharyngeal nerve arise from?
Medulla oblongata
Which is the only nerve to pass out of the head/neck region?
Vagus nerve
The vagus nerve innervates which muscles?
muscles of the soft palate, pharynx, intrinsic laryngeal muscles and palatoglossus muscles of the tongue.
Where does the accessory nerve originate?
from the medulla oblongata and C1-C5 of the spinal cord.
Where does the hypoglossal nerve arise?
medulla oblongata
Which muscle does the hypoglossal nerve NOT innervate? Why?
palatoglossus because its being innervated by the CX
The hypoglossal nerve is joined temporarily by what?
Fibers from spinal nerves C1 and C2 which form the superior limb of the ansa cervicalis.
