What the Council Learned in Law?

A

This is the main offshoot of the Council and was developed during the second half of HVII during the reign, under Bray’s leadership. It was not recognised as a court of law.

Who was in charge of this offshoot?

A

Reginald Bray (until his death in 1503) and Richard Empson. Dudley then joined Empson after Bray’s death. They formed a feared combination of able and conscientious bureaucrats who raised the extraction of money from the king’s subjects to a fine art.

A

They were seized and taken to the Tower of London and were executed by HVIII. They were hated amongst nobility.

A

The court was at the centre of the government and the royal court had to be magnificent and generous seeming as wealth was power.

A

1) The Household Proper, which was responsible for looking after the king, the courtiers’ guests and other ‘hangers-on’ who were being entertained. Lord Stewart supervised these personal and catering.
2) The Chamber (the politically important part) headed by the Lord Chamberlain.

Why was the position of Lord Chamberlain important?

A

It was powerful and had a matter of considerable trust.

What happened with the Lord Chamberlain in 1495?

A

In 1495, HVII discovered that his Lord Chamberlain, Sir William Stanley, had been involved in a treasonable plot with the pretender Perkin Warbeck.

What was Henry’s response to this treasonable plot?

A

His response was to remodel the Chamber by creating a new Privy (i.e. Private) Chamber.

What was the Privy Chamber?

A

It served as a retreat for the king and his most intimate servants. It changed the character of the court which made it difficult for those who had lost the king’s favour to regain his support.
