When did he join the White Horse group?
in 1520s to discuss the exciting new ideas of Lutheranism coming from Europe. Cranmer was a young scholar at Cambridge. Cranmer was influenced by these ideas and stopped short of embracing them to the point of becoming a heretic.
In which writing did he use an Erastian argument?
He wrote a defence of the king’s desire for a divorce. he justified the divorce on the grounds that monarchs were the highest authority within their lands so could do as they pleased).
What did Henry see in Cromwell?
a friend of the same age and an ally against the power of the Pope. impressed by his moderate reformist ideas.
When did Cranmer become Archbishop of Canterbury?
1532, when Archbishop Warham died. Henry asked the pope to appoint Cranmer to fill vacancy. Cranmer had never held a senior post within the church prior to this.
Why did Henry appoint Cranmer as Archbishop?
to put pressure on the Pope to give him his divorce. he also saw the advantage of having a supporter as the leading English churchmen.
What sympathies did Cranmer show?
Protestant sympathies by supporting the publication of the Bible in English and the efforts of Cromwell to move essential doctrines away from traditional teachings.
What did he do when other Protestant bishops resigned?
He stood by while Henry attacked reform by persecuting Lutherans and pushing Articles Act through parliament in 1539.
What helped Cranmer to escape the traps set by the conservative faction during the 1540s?
his loyalty to Henry, he could survive as archbishop into Ed VI’s reign.
How did Cranmer follow the Protestant mood?
his wording of 1549 and 1552 Prayer Books. it spoke of trying to find a form of religion that would end religious disagreements and establish a permanent base for faith.
Who did Cranmer consult?
Protestant leading reformers and Catholic theologians from Europe. never got to set out what the uniform faith should be. He also supported moderate Protestant thinking but respected and sought the value of Catholic rituals.
What happened to Cranmer during the reign of Mary 1?
he was deeply involved in the writings of Protestant prayer books and was arrested on charges of heresy. he publicly renounced his Protestant errors five times during his trial but was executed in 1556.
