Cough Flashcards
Cough chief pathology?
reverse flow of LU QI
Cough western diseases?
COPD, whooping cough, TB, pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchiectasis
Cough etiology?
EXO cough= Shi–>xie Qi—W-C–>heat
—W-H–>dry/phlegm-heat
ENDO cough= Shi+Xu–>1) other zang fu affecting LU–SHI–>Xu
2) LU disease--XU--->Shi - --->1) phlegm(heat/cold) - --->2) fire (Shi/Xu)
Organs involved in Cough?

Differentiate EXO/ENDO cough?
EXO= sudden onset ENDO=recurrent onset acute duration chronic duration exterior pattern(fever+chills) interior pattern(no fever+chill at same time) combination shi+xu
EXO cough patterns?
1) W-C
2) W-H
3) Wind warm dryness
4) Wind cool dryness
ENDO cough patterns?
1) retention of phlegm-damp in Lung
2) retention of phlegm-heat in Lung
3) retention of Cold fluid in Lung
4) Liver-fire burning Lung
5) Lung Qi Xu
6) Lung yin xu
How can you differentiate cough?
1) time of cough
2) voice
3) aggravating factors
4) phlegm (quality, quantity)
Paraxsmal cough, hoarseness voice, yellow sticky sputum
Wind-heat cough
severe dry cough, little sputum, difficult to expectorate, may be blood
both Wind-warm-dryness, and Wind-cool-dryness
spasmodic cough, itchy throat, small quantity sputum, dilute, easy expectoration
Wind-cold cough
heavy cough, rattling sound, copious sticky sputum, greasy or thick white, full chest, nausea, poor appetite, lassitude
T-pale, puffy, white greasy coat
P-slippery, soft
Retention of Phelgm Damp in Lung
Unproductive cough, small sticky sputum, maybe blood
T-red, little coat
P-thready, rapid
LU yin xu
Irritating cough, small sticky sputum, difficult to expectorate, hypochondriac pain, red eyes/face, dry mouth/throat, effected by emotions
Liver-fire burning LU
Cough, copious clear white sputum, dilute/frothy, cold limbs, aversion to cold, often in winter
T-pale, puffy, slight purple, white slippery coat
P-soft
Retention of Cold Fluid-Phlegm in LU
