Corrective Exercise Flashcards
Corrective exercise
Activities aimed at restoring or enhancing joint function via improvement in neuromuscular or musculoskeletal systems
Prioritization model
Dictates areas and issues of greatest need
Prioritization model should be implemented based on
Client’s needs and level of dysfunction
Needs analysis
Adaption requirements determined by screening and evaluation protocol
Primary Limitation
Significant issue, may be painful, contributes to reduction in overall function and performance; immediate corrective strategy needed
Secondary Limitation
Reduce performance capability but no major discomfort; adjunct CE, movement rehearsal
Early phases of corrective program require
high volume for motor rehearsal; neural pathways easily disrupted without adequate volume
Motor Rehearsal
Repeated exposure to movement pattern
Closed Kinetic Chain Exercise
Force applied to distally fixed position; forces body to stabilize segments across kinetic chain; military press, pull ups, push ups, squat, deadlift
Open Kinetic Chain Exercise
Force applied to moveable object at distally fixed position; reduces stability requirements, more isolated loading; lat pull down, leg press, leg curl
Closed Circuit Exercise
Both working limbs connected to load; minimizes stability demands, increases loading potential
Open Circuit Exercise
Limbs manage seperate loads; increases stability demands and potential ROM
Time under tension
Total amount of time a muscle experiences tension; may be calculated in segments (set) or in totality (bout)
Preventative & restorative concept
Remove limitations
Establish function
Enhance health-related fitness
Improve performance
Fixed compensation
Chronic biomechanical compensation which cannot be alleviated with proper instruction or cueing
