Inflammation of the conjunctiva

Thin layer of tissue that covers inside of eyelids and sclera of the eye

bacterial

Presentation
unilateral or bilateral
red eyes, bloodshot
itchy or gritty sensation
discharge from eye
Does conjunctivitis cause pain?
No
Does conjunctivitis affect visual acuity?
No
Does conjunctivitis result in photophobia?
No
Bacterial conjunctivitis presentation
purulent discharge
worse in mornings - eyes stuck together
start in one eye and spread to other
highly contagious
Viral conjunctivitis presentation
clear discharge
other symptoms of viral infection eg dry cough, sore throat and blocked nose
Lymph nodes viral conjunctivitis
preauricular
Differentials for acute red eye - 2 categories
painful or painless
painless red eye differentials
conjunctivitis
episcleritis
subconjunctival haemorrhage
painful red eye differentials
glaucoma anterior uveitis scleritis corneal abrasion trauma foreign body keratitis
how long to resolve?
1-2 weeks with no treatment
advice given
good hygiene eg towels/rubbing eyes/washing hands
avoid contact lenses
clean eyes with warm water
