Coagulation Flashcards
What has a major role in arterial thrombosis
Platelet aggregation however coagulation is also involved
What is thrombosis
The formation of a thrombus within a vessel
What is an embolus
Fragment or whole thrombus detached from blood vessel wall which travels through blood vessels
What is an anticoagulant
Helps prevent blood clots
Where is heparin present in the body
Liver, lungs and mast cells (natural)
How is heparin administered
Via injection
What does heparin activate
Antithrombin
What does Antithrombin inactivate
Thrombin & Factors Xa
How is warfarin administered
Orally
What does warfarin do?
Decreases body’s ability to form clots by blocking the formation of Vitamin K depending clotting factors
What does warfarin activate
Factor II (prothrombin)
What are the problems associated with warfarin
Slow onset Activation influenced by Vitamin K Many interactions e.g. Drugs, food Monitored using 'international normalised ratio' (INR) Risk of haemorrhage
What does teratogenic mean
Something that can cause a birth defect
What other drugs should warfarin not be taken with
Carbamazepine and Cimetidine
What other anticoagulants could potentially replace warfarin
Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) & Dabigatran (Pradaxa)
