CNS blood flow Flashcards
Internal carotids
Branch anteriorly from the carotid arteries and project into the brain case
external carotids
branch ventrally from the carotid arteries and projects to the face
Carotid sinus
Base of internal carotid which contains baroreceptors and chemoreceptors
external carotid branches
-lingual (forward down)
-facial (forward up)
-occipital (backwards)
-superficial temporal (over)
Internal carotid branches
-Ophthalmic artery
-Anterior cerebral artery (frontal and parietal)
-Middle cerebral artery (midbrain and lateral CNS)
Vertebral arteries
Fuse and make the basilar artery
Basilar blood supply
Branches out to feed the pons, medulla and midbrain
Posterior cerebral arteries
From the basilar artery these connect to the internal carotids (COW)
Posterior communication arteries
Connect the posterior cerebral arteries to the Internal carotids (COW)
anterior communication artery
Connects the two anterior carotids together to complete COW
circle of willis
A backup blood flow formed by the carotid and vertebral blood flow
Superior, anterior inferior, posterior inferior Cerebellar arteries
Branches from the basilar artery feeding the cerebellum area
CPP
Cerebral perfusion pressure. is the blood pressure at capillary level
ICP
Intracranial pressure. pressure due to CSF and Brian tissues
ICP and CPP relationship
ICP pushes on blood vessels and reduces pressure. Can increase in reduce blood pressure to 0
