Today I have been asked to insert a catheter into your bladder. This will involve me inserting a rubber tube up for penis and into your bladder and this will allow you to pass urine and will allows us to monitor for urine levels. Would that be ok?

For this procedure it will require you to be bare below the waist and the examiner will be acting as the chaperone - would that be ok?

1. open up equipment
2. I am going to put my gloves on
3. ask my chaperone to fill he gallipot with fluid
4. I am now going clean the area
5. put sterile field on
6. make a hammock with one of the gauzes
7. use it as a sling for the penis
8. clean all around the penis - once only technique
9. get instilla gel and insert in and around penis - I am going to be out some jelly around you penis which will numb the area a bit.

WAIT 3-5MINS FOR ANAESTHETIC TO WORK

10. CHANGE GLOVES!!!

1. change gloves
2. put urine catcher pot under the patient
3. pick up catheter
4. loop it around your fingers
5. with one hand using the sling hold the penis upwards
6. then with the other feed the catheter into the penis
7. then inflate the ballon with saline in syringe - 10 mls
8. tug on it to check if it is inflated
9. connect to catheter bag
10. finito!
