  1. Hello my name is Anjali Singh and I am a third year medical student
  2. please can i confirm your name, age and DOB?
  3. I am now going to check that against your wrist band if that is ok
  4. Today I have been asked to insert a cannula into your arm. This will involve me inserting a small tube into your vein with a needle. i will then remove the needle and the tube will be left in your arm. This will allow us to give your fluids. Would that be ok?

  1. wash hands
  2. clean trolley
  3. gather equipment
  4. check expiry dates and integrity of packs
  5. put tourniquet on and look for veins
  6. sterilise site

  2. extension lead

3 .0.9% nacl 10ml

  1. filter needle
  2. cannula - pink/green
  3. syringe
  4. tourniquet

what do you need to draw up and prime? (3)

A
  1. draw up flush without touching flush bottle
  2. prime extension leads
  3. place sterile drape on patient

How do you insert the cannula? (7)

A
  1. at 30 degrees angle
  2. look for flashback and then insert at a lower angle
  3. insert the cannula fully by retracting the needle back and then fully inserting the cannula
  4. remove needle and put in sharps bin
  5. put extension lead onto the cannula
  6. then flush will syringe
  7. ask if it is painful at all
