Today I have been asked to take some blood cultures from you. This will involve me taking a sample of blood from your vein using a needle and then sending them for being tested for any bugs.

Is that ok?

1. tourniquet
2. check veins
3. sterilise site and clean bottles with wipe
4. open sterile pack - has butterfly needle
5. wear sterile gloves
6. insert needle
7. fill aerobic bottle first by holding it up right (3-5mls)
8. then swap to anaerobic bottle
9. release tourniquet
10. get patient comfortable
11. label bottles
