Classification And Heredity Flashcards
Classification
Taxonomy - science of classifying organisms
Important to group organisms in the same so that
-the study of organisms is simplified
- It’s easier for scientists to communicate more efficiently
Species
A group of organisms capable of reproducing to produce fertile offspring
Heredity (genetic inheritance)
The passing on of features from parents to offspring by means of genes
A gene
- a section of dna that causes the production of protein
- they are units of heredity found in the nucleas
Gene expression
The way in which the genetic info in a gene is decoded in the cell and used to make a protein
Eg a child might inherit the gene for tallness however due to a lack of nutrients the gene might not be expressed
Chromosomes
Are composed of 60% protein and 40% DNA
97% is considered non coding dna or junk dna
