Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Is the production of glucose from carbon dioxide and water using light energy trapped by chlorophyll
Chemical equation
Word equation
Carbon dioxide + water —>glucose +oxygen
Chlorophyll
6co2 + 6H2o—————-> c6H12o6 + 6o2
Role of photosynthesis
Plants use it to make food
Animals get there food from plants
Produces oxygen for aerobic respiration
Removed carbon dioxide from the air
Human methods of increasing the rate of photosynthesis
Artificial light - used in greenhouses
Increased temp - increase the enzymes activity
Light stage
-dependent on the energy provided by light to carry out reactions
- requires light
-takes place in chloroplast
-7 pigments including chlorophyll
-plants absorb all colours of white light except green and yellow
-each pigment absorbs different coloured light which allowed the chloroplast to absorb much light as possible
-light energy is transferred to electrons which energies the electrons
- energised electron leaves the chlorophyll and enter two pathways
Pathway 1 (cyclic electron flow)
Pathway 2 ( non cyclic electron flow )
