Ameaba (prostista) Flashcards
Amoeba
•A microscopic organism that lives in fresh water or seawater
•Unicellular and heterotrophic- can’t make its own food
•Eukaryotic cell
Cell membrane
Keeps the cell contents in place
Semi permeable
Ectoplasm and endoplasm
Make up the cytoplasm
Nucleas
Controls the cell
Food vacuoles
Secretes acid and enzymes to kill and digest prey
Pseudopodia
Movement and engulfs prey
Contractile vacuole
Responsible for osmoregulatio.
Without a contractile vacuole amoeba would expand and burst
Protoplasm
Living part of the cell
Osmoregulation
The maintenance of content osmotic pressure in the fluids of an organism by the control of water and salt concentrations
How osmoregulation is carried out by organisms
-water enters due to osmosis
-excess water enters the contractile vacuole
-contractile vacuole swells
-moves to the edge of the cell
-bursts and expels water
- cycle is repeated
Freshwater amoeba
It’s cytoplasm is more concentrated than its external environment
As a result water enters amoeba by osmosis
Saltwater amoeba
It’s cytoplasm is equal concentrated to its external environment
