Cell Diversity Flashcards
Tissue
A group of cells that work together to carry out the same function
Plant tissue four types
Dermal
Ground
Vascular
Meristematic
1dermal tissue
F- Protects plants
A- have a thickened cell wall
2 ground tissue
F- photosynthesis
A-contains a lot of chloroplasts for photosynthesis
Animal tissue four types
Muscular
Nervous
Epithelial
Connective
1muscular tissue
F-movement of skeleton
A-contains a lot of mitochondria for respiration
2nervous tissue
F-carries electric impulses to and from the brain and spinal cord
A-contains a lot of schwann cells to produce myelin
Tissue culture
The growth of cells in or on sterile nutrient median outside of an organism
In vitro
Growth of cells or tissue outside the body in an artificial environment
In vivo
Happening inside the body of an organism
Requirements for successful tissue culture
Sterile conditions
Nutrients
Suitable temp and pH
Application/ uses of tissue culture
Skin grafts - used to grow new skin for patients with bad burns
Benefits -no need to remove skin from another part of the body
Organs
Is a group of tissues thag work together to carry out the same functions
Systems
A number of organs working together to carry out one or more functions
Biological organisation
The way in which living things are organised
