What age does early childhood span?
2-6 years

What does attachment look like in early childhood?
- attachment is protective and sets a foundation for social competencies

- how they are raised + environment develops emotional security and cognition (lecture)

- just as supportive/detrimental - Single parent homes

- Gender identity not much affected from 2-3 and 4-5 years old
- Exposure and curiosity and affect sexual development
What are 3 ways to promote health and wellness in early childhood?
- Sleep
- transitioning from crib to bed, might get night terrors, etc - Illnesses
- Immunizations
How can we promote nutrition and eating in early childhood? (3)
- Healthy food habits
- turn off the TV and put electronics away (causes them to eat more or less)
- Food aversions develop quickly at this age (picky)

- let them help cook
- expose them often (if they say no, try again)
What should activity patterns look at this age? (3)
- 60 minutes of physical activity per day
- Limit sedentary behaviours
- Benefits of physical activity
How can we prevent accidents at this age? (2)
- 3/1000 children require hospitalization (preventable)
- Home safety and childproofing measures
Why is obesity detrimental in this age? (2)
- obesogenic environments
- Higher risk of developing physical and emotional health problems
maintaining health at this age sets the stone for health as adults
What is Jordan’s principle? (2)
- Promoting justice and equity for all children
- Equity of services, such as speech therapy, educational supports, med. equip., mental health services
regardless if living on or off reserve
Jordan was born with a lot of disabilities. The government did not where to put him +funding
What is Joyce’s principle? (3)
- Aim is to guarantee to all Indigenous people the right equitable access without discrimination, to all social and health services
- also the right to enjoy the best possible physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health
- Requires recognition and respect of all Indigenous people’s traditional and living knowledge in all aspects of health
