What does it mean to be transgender?
- a person whose gender identity and SAAB do not correspond based on tradition expectations
ex. Person assigned female sex at birth who identifies as a man
Does being transgender also include people with gender identities outside the girl/woman and boy/man gender binary structure?
yes
- ex. people who are gender fluid or non-binary
What does non-binary mean?
- Describes a person whose gender identity falls outside the traditional gender binary structure of girl/woman and boy/man
- sometimes abbreviated as NB or enby
What is a trans man?
- a transgender person whose gender identity is a boy/man/male may use this term to describe themselves
What is a trans woman?
- A transgender person whose gender identity is girl/woman/female may use these terms to describe themselves
- some will use the term woman

- embodies masculine and feminine traits
- traditionally hold special roles and privileges in their communities to maintain piece and balance
Is two-spirit an identity by itself?
no because it has different meanings for each nation
According to WHO, what is gender affirming care? (2)
- encompasses a range of social, psychological, behavioural, and medical interventions designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity when it conflicts with the gender they were assigned at birth
- The interventions help transgender people align various aspects of their lives (emotional, interpersonal, and biological) with their gender identity
Gender affirming care is an unbrella term which includes what factors? (4)
- Using language and pronouns that affirm the client’s gender identity
- Providing a clinical space which is welcoming to transgender/non-binary individuals
- Having staff in all areas who are trained in gender-affirming care
- Medical procedures that align with one’s gender identity and this can include surgery or hormone treatment , surgical procedures, laser hair removal, hormone therapy, etc.
Does gender affirming care just a new word for “sex change” or “sex reassignment?”
no, it refers to the holistic approach that addresses a person’s mental and physical wellbeing
What are the best practices for gender affirming-care? Answer the following:
1. Assume
2. Ask

4. Mirror
5. Apologize
- Never assume a patient’s identity
- Ask patients about how they share their gender identity with others in their social circle
- Use gender neutral language
- Mirror the language they use - if you do not know what a word means, ask
- Apologize if you use wrong pronouns and move on
