Class 1 - Stages of Development Flashcards
What are the 3 known stages of growth?
- physical growth
- differentiation
- maturation
Physical growth is quantifiable. What does that mean?
- An increase in cell size and number results in increase in size and weight
ie. weighing a baby - percentile; objective and quantifiable, but limitations of the percentile we sue
How does culture play a part in physical growth? (3)
ethnic backgrounds
- where did they find the “expected growth” from, and where are they basing it from
- right from the beginning, there can be abnormal growth when they are normal
What is differentiation? (2)
- Universal human species cell specialization
- process where initial forms of cells and structures become specialized
What does differentiation result in?
- changes in structure and function
What is maturation?
- acquisition of adult-like behaviours, characteristics, and features
What is the goal of maturation?
optimal function (fully developed and optimal way)
What does maturation allow for? (2)
- increase in adaptability and competence
- gets better as we get older, experiences influence you
In indigenous culture, what is the human life cycle symbolized by? (3)
- medicine wheel
- equal sized sections
- All aspects of human development are viewed as being in harmony with the cycle of life in nature
In relation to concept-scope-attributes, how do nurses care for development + scope of development? (3)
Concept (development)
- affects all aspects of individuals and thus directs our nursing care
Scope of Concept
- the extent to which development impacts an individual
Attributes applied to concept
- qualities, characteristics, and features
What are the characteristics of the scope of development? (2)
- organized, progressive, and predictable
- individuals vary in the time of onset for each stage, and the length of time spent in each stage
What happens if milestones are not met? (2)
- something may be occurring
- individual variation, development as a pendulum (in same amount lf time)
List the stages of development, starting from embryologic all the way to older adult
