What is the reticular Activating System? (3)
- complex bundle of brain nerves responsible for regulating wakefulness and sleep-wake transitions
- need calm mind and body
- in lecture, also noise/processing time for messages
What are the 2 main phases of sleep?
REM and NREM
- NREM has 3 stages, 1,2,3
How long does a full sleep cycle take?
90-110 minutes
- most people cycle through 4-6 cycles per night
What measures the electrical activity in the brain while asleep?
EEG or electroencephalogram

What kind of waves are produced when you are awake? Drowsy?
awake - beta waves
Drowsy - Alpha waves
What occurs in N1 stage of NREM? (4)
- theta waves
- light sleep

- sleep spindles and K complexes

- delta waves
