What is teratogenesis? (2)
A
- deviations in prenatal development can result from exposure to teratogens, agents that cause damage to an embryo or a fetus
- physical, cognitive, congenital defects, even from experiences)

When is the greatest risk from most teratogens prevalent? (2)
A
first 8 weeks of gestation
- bc vital organs are forming and you do not know if your are pregnant

How can viral infections attack the embyro/fetus?
A
- viruses can pass through placental filters and attack embryo or fetus directly

How can drugs affect the embyro/fetus? (2)
A
- prescription and illicit can have poor outcomes
- High maternal exposure to alcohol can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD)

How does the environment cause teratogenesis? (2)
A
- chemicals, toxins, radiation (what mom is exposed to)
- Maternal illness/infection (nutrition, not enough folic acid, chronic illness (diabetes))
