Class 21 - Plasticity and recovery from injury Flashcards
What is the Kennard principle?
Functions are spared when injury occurs during infancy. This is oversimplified. Depends on what behaviour is affected and the extent and location of damage.
Between what years is the most recovery found in an early brain injury?
Between 1 to 5 years old
Why can language survive after an early left hemisphere injury?
There is a spot in the right hemisphere for language… can result in crowding
When will damage to the left side of the brain shift language to the right side of the brain?
when the lesion is located on the language area
How is the recovery after injury during neurogenesis?
Complete recovery
How is the recovery after injury during migration and differentiation?
Not present. Terrible
Is there recovery after a decortication?
No recovery
What effect does brain damage have on brain size during adulthood?
The brain is smaller in adulthood
Is neurogenesis possible after an early cortical injury?
Yes
What is plasticity shown by?
Changes in behaviour combined with changes in the nervous system
What does prism adaptation show?
Temporary changes in the premotor and occipital cortex
What is focal hand dystonia?
Loss of motor control in a digit after making repetitive synchronous movements with another digit
Are cells with more challenging tasks more complex?
Yes
What is kindling?
Development of seizure activity after repeated exposure to an initially subconvulsant stimulus
Where in the adult brain can humans manufacture new neurons?
Olfactory bulb (stem cells in lateral ventricles generate new olfactory bulb cells), hippocampus (new cells develop from granule cell layer and hilus)
