Class 10 - Parietal lobe Flashcards
What sulci/fissues border the parietal lobe?
Sylvian fissure, central fissure, parieto-occipital sulcus
What are the Brodmann’s areas for the postcentral gyrus?
1 , 2 , 3
What are the Brodmann’s areas for the superior parietal lobe?
5, 7
What are the Brodmann’s areas for the parietal operculum?
43
What are the Brodmann’s areas for the supramarginal gyrus?
40
What are the Brodmann’s areas for the angular gyrus?
39
Which von Economo posterior parietal area is polymodal and larger in the right hemisphere?
PG
What does the intraparietal sulcus (cIPS) do?
Control of saccadic eye movements (LIP) and visual control of object grasping (AIP)
What does the parietal reach regions (PRR) do?
Visually guided grapsing movements
What are the inputs and outputs of area PE (somatosensory)?
Inputs: somatosensory strip
Outpus: primary motor cortex, supplementary motor cortex, premotor regions, area PF
What are the inputs and outputs of area PF?
Inputs: sensory to premotor cortex, small visual input from PGO area
Outputs: primary motor cortex, supplementary motor cortex, premotor regions, area PF
What is another name for area PG? What stream is it a part of?
“Parieto-temporo-occipital crossroad”, part of the dorsal stream
What do the supramarginal and angular gyri do?
Involved in language and reading (near Wernicke’s area)… possibly arithmetic
What is hapsis?
Perception of objects using fine touch and pressure (think about haptic feedback on your phone)
what is proprioception?
Body sense
What is nocioception?
Perception of pain and temperature stimuli… usually unpleasant
Is balance a parietal lobe function?
No, it is in the vestibular system of the ear
How many homunculi are there?
At least 4. Muscles, fast skin, slow skin and joints/pressure
What is stereognosis?
Ability to identify objects by touch
What is finger graphesthesia?
Ability to identify writing on palms or fingertips
What is double simultaneous stimulation?
Ability to identify two identical but separate sensory inputs (can be visual or touch)
What is spatial navigation by a cognitive spatial map mediated by (unconscious knowledge of how to reach destination)?
Medial parietal region (MPR)
What are three symptoms of parietal lobe damage that do not fit with the visuomotor view of the parietal lobe?
- Arithmetic difficulties
- Language difficulties
- Movement sequence difficulties
What is acalculia and how might it result from parietal lobe patients?
The inability to do arithmetic. Could be due to the spatial properties of addition and subtraction
