Stress
Process of appraising an event as threatening or challenging and responding to it.
Stressors
Things that push our buttons; a challenge or event.
Stress Reactions
From alarm to exhaustion: physical and emotional responses.
Flight or Fight Response
An emergency response that mobilies every and activity for attacking or escaping a threat.
Tend and Befriend Response
People often provide support to others. They bond with and seek support from others.
Psychneuroimmunology
Studies mind-body interactions.
Stress & Heart DIsease: Type A
Competitive, hard-driving, impatient, verbally aggressive and anger-prone people.
Stress & Heart Disease: Type B
Easy going and relaxed people.
Problem Focused Coping
Attempting to reduce stress directly.
Emotion Focused Coping
Attempting to reduce stress by avoiding or ignoring a stressor, attending to emotional needs related to the stress reaction.
Personal Control
Sense of controlling one’s environment rather than feeling helpless.
Learned Helplessness
Hope less and passive resignation that an animal or person learns when unable to avoid repeatable averse events.
Power of Personal Control
Perceived control of basic to human functioning.
External Locus of Control
Perception that chance or outside forces beyond one’s personal control determined fate.
Internal Locus of Control
Perception that each person controls his or her own fate.
Self Control
Ability to control impulses and delay short-term gratification for greater long-term rewards.
Optimism
Anticipation of positive outcomes. Expects control and cope well with stressful events and to enjoy health.
Pessimism
Anticipation of Negative outcomes. Persists expect the worst and doubt that their goals will be achieved.
Managing Stress Effects
Aerobic exercise, relaxation, meditation and active spiritual engagement may help a person gather inner strength and less stress effects.
Reflective Practice
Attending to current experiences in a nonjudgmental and accepting manner.
Happiness
The short life of emotional up and downs.
Resilience
Personal strength that helps people cope and recover.
Feel good, Do good Phenomenon
When people feel happy they become more helpful.
Subjective Well Being
Self-perceived happiness or satisfaction with life.
